Animoto
Animoto.com allows users to create professional and beautiful video/still displays - this is rather like Movie Maker or PowerPoint but less technical skill is required, so the students can focus on their content. As well, the results are much more professional. This is a terrific applications to use for Visualizing.
Students can set up their own accounts, but the free account only allows a 30 second film to be made. If you set up an education account, students can have unlimited access.
To get an education account, you have to sign up yourself, and then apply. It says on the site that the application process can take "weeks", but I have applied twice and both times I heard back in less than an hour. Once you are upgraded to Education Account, you receive a Promo Code, which you then use to set up your students accounts. This set up is a little more complex than most. For complete instructions, go to the Animoto in Education FAQ.
One characteristic of Animoto that might be useful, especially with younger students, is that animoto accepts "sub" email addresses. Rather than having students use their own email addresses, you can have them log in using a sub-address of your email address to protect their privacy online. A sub-address is structured for google emails addresses by adding a plus sign to your username, then a reference to the student: [email protected]. Animoto sees this as a unique email address, but gmail ignores everything after the + sign.
