Project 2 - Panel Discussion
For this assignment, students will be working in groups of four to prepare for a panel discussion about one reading of the short stories.
Stories will be assigned and will not be the same as the story they did for their website.
Panel discussions will be recorded.
Give out the student assignment sheet and review with students.
As a group students will read and throughly familiarize themselves with the story.
After one week of studying the story, students will present their panels.
The questions presented to the panels will be about reading the story. Students will not be informed in advance of the questions. The group members will respond to questions from the moderator in the form of DISCUSSION, using and demonstrating their academic conversation skills. This assignment is NOT a simple Q and A.
Each group member will be expected to demonstrate the 5 key skills of academic conversation: elaborating and clarifying, supporting ideas with examples, building on or challenging someone else’s idea, paraphrasing, and synthesizing.
Each panel will have 30 minutes. One panel will be presented per class.
(For the remainder of the class, students will work on their essays.)
Panel discussions will be recorded on video. One camera will be stationary. The other will move around to show different angles and to focus ont he face of the speaker.
Students will edit the video of their panel discussion into an 8-minute segment that presents the most important points of the discussion. This video will be added to the website for story (even though the discussion is carried out by different students)
